Q1: Who Do We Choose?

Simply put, you must choose a company who you can be confident with and trust that what you order is actually what you get. Within the hire business, the product you choose is only a tiny part of your transaction. You also pay for service, quality of cleanliness and above all the knowledge that your orders will be fulfilled, without question.

Q2: What Do I Wear?

You need only consider a few things. These are to choose clothing you are comfortable with and ideally enhances the colour or theme of your wedding.

Q3: Why are there such huge variations in prices between companies? It all looks pretty much the same to me!

There are two main areas that affect price, quality and service. Hugh Harris along with other independent retailers simply have to get it right to survive so invest as much in their service as they do their product. WATCH OUT as paying cheaper prices means a cheaper service.

Q4: Why choose Hugh Harris?

We are an award winning independent company that is committed to the quality of product and level of personal service. We have been established over 90 years and have been specialising in Hirewear for the last 25.

Recent winners of several awards, we carry, on site, a larger range of suits and accessories than most, mainly designed and made exclusively for Hugh Harris.

Q5: I have never hired clothing before, how much should I pay?

As long as you feel comfortable with the product and service, simply pay what you feel is worth it. Think of it like a good meal, fast food or home cooked lovelyness.

To offer you a choice, Hugh Harris carry traditional products at traditional prices as well as designer outfits at designer prices. Of course the choice is yours.

REMEMBER though, what price do you put on service?

Q6: I have never hired before, what’s the routine?

Things have changed with the introduction of our website which means we now take orders from all over the globe. Usually though you visit us to try on and choose your outfit at which time we will carry out a proper fitting and agree sizes with you.

We will talk you through your options and prices and make our recommendations. Once you have chosen your outfit we book you into our custom made computer system and ask for the relevant payments which can be as little as 1/3 your total order.

Q7: There’s a party of us all getting kitted out shall we all come in together?

We strongly advise against group visits. It’s your big day and its important that you can choose what you want and what you feel happiest with. The more people in attendance especially at your initial choosing stage often results in many unwanted opinions, can become confusing and at times distressing.

Getting it right takes time and needs both yours and our full concentration. We recommend that the groom and his fiancé visit first with either the best man or one other groomsman. This way you can get a "them and me" look and will help you decide the look of all outfits combined. The rest of the party can visit individually or in groups of no more than three, with or without you and basically do as they’re told!!

Q8: How long before the event do I need to book?

For major events like weddings we suggest that you book as early as you can. This is certainly true since we hit the dizzy heights of award winning. This has resulted in a huge increase in orders resulting in higher demand for our outfits.

Booking early can ensure that you have the fullest possible choice from our range but also size range and should ensure that you won’t be disappointed by limited stock availability or size availability.

For school proms, Ascot and other big local events we suggest you book no later than one month before your function. For regular dinners etc preferably one to two weeks although we can nearly always also fix you up at the last minute if necessary.

Q9: What happens if things go wrong?

Quite rightly this is a major concern for shoppers but especially those choosing things for such important events such as weddings. Choosing a store that carries stock on the premises and with staff that actually care about your order will result in any issues dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Simply put choosing a store that carries a minimal stock with inexperienced staff results in, well we will let you work that one out.

Q10: It’s our big day and I’m frightened something might go wrong and spoil it!

This of course is a real concern. At Hugh Harris we are fully aware of this and are totally committed to ensuring that everything goes off smoothly and without problems, you’ve got plenty of other things to be thinking about!

Because we are an independent company and offer a very detailed and knowledgable service, we take personal responsibility for your individual order.

Q11: Do we need to make an appointment?

We offer a limited appointment only service on Thursday evenings and some Sundays during the peak booking season otherwise it is an open door policy during normal working hours.

However it is a good idea to let us know in advance that you are planning to visit so that we can advise you of known busy times / events.

Q12: Do we bring everyone with us when we want to choose & try on outfits? See above 'There’s a party...'

In our experience we find that limiting numbers, especially at the important choosing and quoting time, is advisable. When groups arrive, for example 7 men, 2 girlfriends, 1 pushchair, spot the dog and, uh oh, 1 x prospective mother in law, things can be very hectic with too many opinions and sometimes disagreements occurring at this important stage.

Just bring in the main decision makers too choose outfits for all.

Q13: Do you open late or on Sundays?

As weddings need a lot more attention and time, we periodically open Thursday evenings and Sundays strictly by appointment only for wedding viewings.

At peak times these are very sort after so it is worth making an appointment as early as you can. Don’t worry, we won’t expect you to order at that stage but would certainly recommend it should you like what you see.

Q14: Who wears what to whatever?

There are certain things people should wear to certain events. However apart from the traditional age old events such as Ascot, Knighthoods and the like, you will see from our product range that you should be able to create a unique look, possibly even pushing the boundaries a bit yet still conform to the event that you are attending

Q15: What is the correct form on what to wear for different occasions?

Rules about dress code are often not as strict as people imagine but by the same token no one wants to make a social blunder. For clarification on terminology and guidance on what to wear for different occasions check out the web, here you will find what you are looking for. Of course our staff know their stuff so a call to us will help.

Q16: Do you just hire or can I buy stuff?

Most of what you see on our site or in store is available to buy as well as hire. Given that most goods are made for us, making an individual order usually requires a personal quote and at least six weeks notice. Given this, within reason, most things are possible.

Q17: Do you sell off ex-hire stock?

Periodically yes. Ask in store for details.
